Understanding Body Mass Index
BMI (Body Mass Index) is a widely used screening tool that categorizes a person's weight status based on height and weight. It helps identify potential health risks associated with being underweight or overweight.
Underweight
Risk of malnutrition, osteoporosis, and vitamin deficiencies.
Healthy
Lowest risk of heart disease and weight-related issues.
Overweight
Increased risk of cardiovascular disease and diabetes.
Limitations of BMI
While BMI is a useful starting point, it doesn't distinguish between muscle and fat. Athletes with high muscle mass may be categorized as overweight despite having low body fat.
