How to Convert CGPA to Percentage?
The Cumulative Grade Point Average (CGPA) is an educational grading system widely used in schools and colleges to measure overall academic performance. To convert your CGPA into a standard percentage, educational boards like CBSE have defined a universal multiplier.
Standard Formula
Percentage = CGPA × 9.5
Example Calculation:
- Assume your final report card shows a CGPA of 8.8.
- Apply the formula: 8.8 × 9.5
- Your final percentage is 83.6%.
Why do we multiply by 9.5?
The multiplier 9.5 is not arbitrary. It represents the mean score of the highest grade band. For instance, in the CBSE system, an A1 grade corresponds to the mark range of 91 to 100. The mathematical average of this range is 95. When scaled down to a 10-point system, this average becomes 9.5. Hence, 9.5 acts as the balancing factor to estimate a student's percentage accurately without inflating the score.
University Specific Grading Scales (Custom Multipliers)
While 9.5 is standard for Indian high schools, many universities (like VTU, Mumbai University, and Anna University) use their own scaling factors to convert pointers into percentages.
For example, Mumbai University uses a 10-point scale but occasionally factors in a flat multiplier of 10 or 7.1 plus constants depending on the engineering branch. Similarly, VTU (Visvesvaraya Technological University) uses the formula: Percentage = (CGPA - 0.75) × 10.
Pro Tip: You can use our tool's "Custom Multiplier" checkbox. If your university mandates a multiplier of 10, simply check the box, enter 10, and click Convert!
Frequently Asked Questions
How do I convert Percentage back to CGPA?
To reverse the calculation, simply divide your percentage by 9.5. (e.g., 85.5% ÷ 9.5 = 9.0 CGPA). You can do this automatically by switching our tool to the "% to CGPA" mode at the top of the calculator.
What is a good CGPA?
A CGPA above 8.0 (76%) is generally considered excellent for high school students. For college admissions, a CGPA of 9.0 or above (85.5%+) is highly competitive and opens doors to top-tier universities.
Is CGPA calculated out of 10 or 4?
It depends on your region. In India, CGPA is almost exclusively calculated on a 10-point scale. In the United States and Canada, the standard is a 4.0 scale (GPA). Our calculator currently defaults to standard 10-point scale arithmetic.
