How to Convert Laser Power Settings?

One of the most common challenges in laser engraving is finding settings for a material (like a Tile or specific wood) that were created for a different machine. A 10W laser cuts differently than a 20W or 40W laser.

The Golden Rule: Energy Density

The core concept is to maintain the same amount of laser energy hitting the material per second.

  • Going Up (10W -> 20W): Your machine is 2x stronger. You can either run 2x Faster (to reduce burn time) or use Half Power.
  • Going Down (20W -> 10W): Your machine is weaker. You must run Slower to allow the laser enough time to burn deep enough.

mm/min vs mm/sec

Diode lasers (xTool, Atomstack, Sculpfun) usually use mm/min. CO2 lasers (Omtech, Thunder) usually use mm/sec.
1000 mm/min = 16.6 mm/sec. Our calculator handles this conversion automatically.
